Iron
These meteorites represent the remnants of the cores of the planets' embryos. A unique iron-nickel alloy. The etching of iron meteorites (siderites) produces so-called Widmanstätten patterns, or Neumann lines.
Division:
- Hexahedrites - less than 6% Nickel (Neumann lines)
- Octahedrites - 6-18% Nickel (Widmanstätten patterns)
- Ataxites - high Nickel content
